Expert block layers in Melbourne and Victoria
Block laying is often confused with bricklaying, but blocks are a completely different material that requires a specialised construction technique. Blockwork is often painted or rendered, so many block layers take shortcuts and pay little attention to aesthetics. Not Callea Stone Masonry. Like everything we do, we go the extra mile to ensure our blockwork is a work of art you won’t want to cover up. Our work has even been featured on The Block ‘22!
Leverage the simple and sustainable beauty of blockwork
Blockwork is a cost-effective construction method using large concrete or cement blocks. Although they’re much larger than a standard brick, blocks have a hollow centre that makes them lighter and easier to work with. Unaffected by water, they’re particularly suitable for harsh climates requiring low maintenance. Their hollow centre also provides outstanding insulation keeping you toasty warm during arctic Melbourne winters.
Blocks’ solid mass and damping properties reduce noise levels between buildings and inside them. They also provide fire isolation with no flame spread, often exceeding the minimum building regulations for fire safety.
Finally, unlike many modern prefab building solutions, blockwork is assembled on-site – giving you the flexibility to change your design during construction.
Our Melbourne block-laying specialties
We use blocks externally for thermally efficient wall structures, forming basements and landscape retaining walls. Internally, we use blocks as the inner leaf of cavity walls for load-bearing walls and partitions. Concrete blocks work with a range of wall finishes, including plaster, dry-lining or simply a painted finish. Or, if you want to keep them raw, they’re available in various colours and textures for architectural interest.
Our project gallery
Everything old is new again, and mid-century modern is the latest style to make a massive comeback. This is great news for blockwork, with patterned concrete blocks (known as breeze blocks) one of the signature features of mid-century modern architecture.
Not only do they look great, but breeze blocks also provide shade, air flow and privacy – shielding the floor-to-ceiling windows that first rose to popularity during the period.
Keen to incorporate the beauty of breeze blocks into your renovation or new build? We can help you source the perfect blocks, create an authentic retro design and bring it to life with our signature attention to detail. You’ll never guess it wasn’t built back in the swinging sixties!
